Adventures of a Wandering Thirtysomething

For two people who dreamed as children of living in a castle, this part of the trip has been particularly fun. We visited 12th century castle ruins, including a climb in medieval mine shafts which Matt was utterly giddy about and I just about peed my pants scared over. Today we ventured through the Berg Eltz castle, one of the best preserved medieval castles in Europe. Passed down through 33 generations and virtually unharmed by wars and sieges, it remains fully standing and furnished just as it was in medieval times. From the hunting room fully decorated in a tasteful-for-the-12th-century variety of animal heads and bear skins, to the chapel, to the armory room of medieval weaponry, to the bedrooms complete with (sort of) toilets, we loved it.

Tomorrow we head for Paris. Our trip there may prove to be more interesting than we had ever planned. From what we can gather, all of the trains into Paris are booked with reservations…and we can’t get a reservation. It may take some fast talking or breaking some minor train laws, but we’re getting to Paris come hell or highwater, so we’ll let you know how that goes once we get there. As long as we don’t get hit by cars or get lost in random train stations, we’ll consider it a success.
