The last leg

We crossed the border from France into Belgium. It was the crossing of impending doom. Not because we dread their delicious chocolate or waffles, but because it means we are on our final stretch of the trip. Six countries, 33 days, and it’s almost over.

Belgium is a great way to go out. It’s laid back, it’s easy and it’s cute. Bruges is a combination of the medieval style of Rothenburg with the canals of Venice, all pulled together by the unique architectural style of the Flemish. There are chocolate shops, waffle stands, fry carts (fries are Belgian, not French), buckets of mussels and beer everywhere, and not a whole lot to do besides walk around, take a bike ride and stuff your face. Just our kind of place.

But I may be the only one having fun. Matt came down with a nasty virus in Paris and, despite his best efforts to maintain our schedule, has spent more time napping and managing mucus than enjoying the sights. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that he will start to feel a little better before our brutal 17 hour trip home. Even the healthiest person will feel sick after sitting on a plane that long.

Tomorrow is our final full day in Europe. We’ll wrap up in Bruges, head to Brussels, and try our best to not think about getting back to reality in the States.
