Taking on the city

Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge on our way to Grimaldi's Pizza
Not since making our way through Europe more than a year ago have Matt and I taken a real vacation of note. So when a major Southwest Airlines sale a couple months back offered $40 one-way flights, we jumped at the opportunity for two cheap tickets to get the heck out of the honky tonk and up to New York City.

As first timers to the Big Apple, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. But as we walked down the street our first day in town, the sight of six-foot-tall string bean fashion models walking side-by-side with the short and dumpy masses in a sea of brick, steel and concrete made us instantly fall in love.

Washington Square - one of our fave spots
Primarily there on a foodie adventure, we skipped over much of the touristy stuff. Only the Status of Liberty, Ellis Island and the observation deck of the Empire State Building made our must-see list. Instead, we ate our way through all the neighborhoods, sampling everything from $5 falafel in Greenwich Village to three Michelin star Italian on the Upper East Side.

In the few hours we actually spent digesting between delicious meals, we daydreamed about what it would be like to live in a city so alive with excitement and energy. Sure the rents are an outrageous $4,000 per month for an apartment the size of a closet, and of course the people/lack of car/ceaseless sounds of horns honking would get old, but hey, we can dream!

More than anything, New York reminded us how much we love to travel. From the new sights, sounds and smells to the pure joy of being on an adventure, exploring the world is truly our passion and we can’t wait for the journeys that lie ahead.
