Net-workin' it

Well, the Cracker Barrel gig didn’t work out. They liked me, I liked them, but we couldn’t get past the relocation date. I got a call from University of Tennessee Athletics for an interview as well. Same story. They need someone now, I’m not available until August.

Barring that I reschedule my trip to Europe (um, not a chance), I’m quickly finding out that I’m a little too far ahead of the game. Employers aren’t willing to wait, and I’m not willing to budge. So I’m taking a break from job applications and moving to Plan B: networking like a maniac.

I really didn’t know I had it in me to bug the heck out of perfect strangers, but apparently desperation disguised as ambition brings out the boldness in me. Every free minute I have is spent following any possible lead and practically stalking people on LinkedIn. I’m connecting with old professors, new professors, Coug grads, Zag grads, PR pros or any pro who will give me the time of day in any industry I could conceivably be interested in. I think even Matt has been impressed by my creativity in playing professional six degrees of separation.

I’ve also started looking into volunteerism in Nashville as a way to gain visibility and experience in all things local. What better way to pass the career transition (i.e. jobless) time than volunteering for the Country Music Hall of Fame or the Country Music Festival.

Who knows if all this hard work will turn into an actual full time gig. But I’m out there, I’m workin’ it, and my online Rolodex if filling up with some really interesting Nashville folks. Now if I could just get the economy to cooperate…
