Hey...you suck!

Much like football fans, hockey fans tend to fall on the extreme end of sports fanaticism. Given the sport’s intense conditions of cold and ice paired with sticks and flying objects, it only makes sense that a fan’s obsession would have to run deep to truly appreciate how gruesome hockey can be. Even at a little ole Chiefs game, you could find me and thousands of other fans taunting the players, cheering when a fight broke out and then cheering even louder when said fight drew blood. Hockey is about the closest modern-day comparison I can find to the Roman Colosseum.

Enter Nashville, or as Preds fans call it around here, Smashville. To look at a Preds fan is to look at any Southern sports fan – ball cap, team jersey, beer in hand and passionate ignorance of the game. But in Nashville, there’s one thing that sets our fans apart from the rest: limited grasp of the English language.
So it should have come as no surprise when the Preds scored a goal and “Rock n’ Roll Part 2,” also known as “The HEY Song,” came blaring over the sound system that all 17,000 fans in the arena, including the five- and six-year-olds in front of us, hollered “HEY…YOU SUCK” in perfect redneck unison. And then during the song’s drum beat section, in a rousing cheer of Southern intelligence, added “WE’RE GONNA BEAT THE HELL OUTTA YOU! IT’S TRUE, IT’S TRUE, IT’S WHAT WE’RE GONNA DO!”

I’ll admit their creativity with one syllable words is catchy. I had a good laugh the first time I heard the cheer. But, as with many Southern-isms that are cute at first and annoying the twentieth time, there’s only so much of YOU SUCK I can take.
Bad cheering aside, we had a blast at the game. The Preds won and, in true Nashville fashion, we went out to celebrate the win with the masses on the city’s famous honky-tonk strip. We’ll definitely be heading to a Preds game again, but I think next time I’ll come armed with a couple drinks already in me and some good earplugs.

Sounds like Fun. Angie (maid of honor in our wedding Angie) treated me to a Red Wings game Christmas of 2009. It was alot of fun. I don't really understand the game much, but people watching was pretty fun. Sounds like yours took the cake though...and wings fans are FAR from civilized either!
