Dubrovnik may be one of the best mixes of all our favorite things that we've ever experienced - a beachy, laid-back vibe mixed with history and architecture dating back to medieval times, plus loads of charm. It's the kind of place where you can relax without feeling like a complete slug because you're surrounded with so much culture.
Dubrovnik is, quite simply, awesome.
We arrived in the late afternoon fairly wiped out from our intense flying schedule, but as soon as we made our way into our rented apartment and took one look out the window out onto the Adriatic Sea with Old Town and the medieval town walls below us, we quickly slipped into vacation mode. THIS is the life!

On our first full day, we scaled the town walls, walking from watchtower to watchtower over the city and along the sea where guards had walked centuries ago and a large moat had helped resist sieges upon the city. We looked out over houses and churches that are more than 500 years old, harbors that have been host to countless ships, and the beautiful, clear blue sea. Despite the rather small size of the original old town, we were pooped after the walk as the combination of the blazing sun and the white stone of the walls make for one scorching hot hike.

We then headed on to the cable car up to Mount Srd (pronounced "surge") to get even better views. Rebuilt in 2010, 20 years after the Yugoslav War tore it to shreds, it's the highest view of the city and offers great views down to Montenegro, across to Bosnia, and up north along the coastline to some of Croatia's other islands.
Today was beach day. After a very late morning of sleeping in (a rarity for us, but obviously needed), we headed out to St. Jakob's Beach - a more, private, secluded little piece of heaven about a 25 minute walk from town. It was just what we needed. The postcard perfect view, the blue water washing up to shore and laying out on beach chairs in the hot sun. Never mind the cigarette smoke, the big bare boobs or the postage stamp swim bottoms of our Italian counterparts, it was precious beach time.

After the beach and a quick shower and spruce up, we headed out for our final hurrah of the day - Buza Bar. Named one of the top 5 best bars in the world, the bar is literally positioned on the rocks above the Adriatic Sea just outside the city walls. In fact, you must slip through a small hole in the wall to reach it, but the ambiance is breathtaking. It was, by far, the most scenic bar we've ever been to - my peach colada went down real easy and I easily could have stayed all night.
Tomorrow we wrap up our stay in Dubrovnik and head on to the island of Korcula.
