Tan lines

If you’re from the north, especially in the Pacific Northwest, you know that sun and warm weather is hard to come by. Just two months out of the year are all you can reasonably count on to get a dose of vitamin D before the clouds, rain, and flannel and boots uniform all roll back in.

Since about midway through college, I have had to seek assistance in getting a golden glow to prove that summer actually occurred. Sometimes in the form of a spray-on tan, but more commonly in the form of a robotic looking bed, I paid out loads of cash in tanning minutes and accelerating lotions to fake my skin into believing it had actually seen the sun.

So it is a proud moment to say that, for the first time in more than seven years, I have real, un-adulterated, I’ve-seen-the-sun-for-more-than-two-seconds, tan lines! For the cost of paying my HOA dues to use our neighborhood swimming pool and a bottle of SPF 30 (just in case I can still ward off cancer after all those years of inviting light bulbs to age me and scramble up my cells), I have a golden tan as evidence of the endless sunny, 90 degree days we have here in Tennessee.

As an added bonus, Matt and I are treating our little poolside sessions as our tropical retreat. With books and magazines in hand, we spend our time catching up on our reading amidst taking dips in the pool, then walk the one block home and whip up Matt’s delicious rum and fruit smoothies.

Summer is definitely sweeter here in Tennessee!
